  • Microsoft makes Project Spark game creation tool free-to-all

    [09.28.15]
  • Project Spark is a PC and Xbox One-powered creative tool that allows users to make their own games and movies, and distribute them to other players -- and now it will be free.

Project Spark’s goal has always been to empower creativity. We’ve been an incubation engine for ideas from epic to artistic and we plan to continue doing so,” said Microsoft's Rahul Sandi, in the blog post announcing the move.

Previously, Project Spark was free-to-play with microtransactions; Microsoft also sold the Xbox One version at retail. Any players who activated the retail disc or purchased in-game content on or after July 28 will receive a Microsoft Store credit. The company also announced that it's raising the limits on creations for its players.

If you're interested in the tool and the thinking behind it, you can watch this free GDC talk from Soren Hannibal, entitled "Project Spark: Enabling and Inspiring the User to Make (Almost) Anything."
