  • Game Design Challenge: Battle Royale

  • GameCareerGuide.com's Game Design Challenge is an exercise in becoming a game developer, asking you to look at games in a new way -- from the perspective of a game creator, producer, marketer, businessperson, and so forth.

Every month, we'll present you with a challenge about developing video games. You'll have two weeks to brainstorm a brilliant solution (see below for how to submit your answers). After the two week submission period elapses, the best answers and the names of those who submitted them will be posted.

    The Challenge

Design a battle royale spinoff for an existing game or franchise

    Assignment Details

Battle royale games are a hot topic in the modern gaming world. After PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds laid the groundwork for the genre, Epic's Fortnite emerged as a genuine cultural phenomenon, and the recent success of Apex Legends showcases the endurance of the battle royale formula.

The battle royale format is fairly simple: 100 people battle against one another until only one player is left standing. To date, battle royale games typically take the form of shooters where players compete with one another for resources and weapons. However, Arika's Tetris 99 demonstrates that battle royale gameplay can survive drastic shifts in genre while keeping its core appeal intact. We think that many other games, genres, and franchises could produce similarly enthralling gameplay using the battle royale formula as a basis.

For Game Career Guide's latest Game Design Challenge, your job is to design a battle royale spinoff for an existing game or franchise.

You may choose any game or franchise as the basis for your design, but your entry must focus on how a battle royale format would fit in with your chosen title's established gameplay conventions. What would fundamentally change about your chosen franchise if it shifted to battle royale gameplay? Which elements would remain the same? Make sure you consider how your game would appeal to longtime fans of the franchise while also remaining true to the battle royale genre at large. Be creative, and have fun!
