  • Dragon Quest V Sees Record Sales In Japanese Charts

    [07.24.08]
  • Square Enix has enjoyed the strongest opening yet for a Dragon Quest game on the Nintendo DS with a remake of the SNES game Dragon Quest V debuting at number one in the Japanese charts with 644,000 units sold.

It is the second time the game has been remade, following an earlier PlayStation 2 version, but the Japanese appetite for what remains the country’s most popular role-playing game franchise appears undiminished.

At number two, anime combat game Gundam Battle Universe also performed extremely well on the PSP, with 138,000 units sold in its first week. It was the most prominent new PSP title in a week in which a new Metallic Blue color version of the console was released.

The third and final new entry in the top ten is PlayStation 3 strategy game Tears to Tiara: Kakan no Daichi, an updated version of an existing PC title from visual novel publisher Aquaplus. The game sold a modest 34,000 on its debut at number four in the charts.

There were no new entries in the rest of the top 30, with the remainder of the chart still enduring seasonally low sales outside of the top few new releases.
