I have recently thought of being a Video Game Review for a Game Career Job. I do not know where to start. I am a good writer and have reviewed games before for non-profit.
Anyone know a place to start this would be? |

Do you have a degree?
Do you have a portfolio? Do you have a resume ready? Have you looked for jobs? Have you applied anywhere?

Hi there
I have also been thinking of becoming a game reviewer, I would also like to know the answer to your question I have a real passion for games that has been with me since the age of 8 when i first set my little eyes on my nes console and since then I have been hooked! I am not under the impression that my love for games will be sufficient so any advice would be great. Oh and good luck with it Muddy! |

Look for college/university courses in writing. Perhaps set up your own games review website/blog, or find another that you can contribute to. Then send out job applications to every game review magazine you can find.
Also I'd recommend you practice researching information, as that's likely to be something you'd have to do if you got a job as a reviewer. In the "Writing" section of the forum on the first page, if you do a quick scan you'll see the following threads that are likely to have useful answers: Advice for a newspaper journalist What can I do to break into the industry as a journalist? looking for game journalist jobs Could I cut it as a game journalist? How to Become a Game Reviewer in ONE Easy Step
Step 1: Review games Seriously, do you like games? I don't just mean that you like to play them. Do you like to analyze them? Can you enjoy a game at the same time you are looking at it critically? Then review a game. Set up a blog and contribute to it weekly at the minimum. Don't tell your readers that a game "is awesome". That doesn't mean anything. Pick apart every aspect of the game from the art to the story to specific gameplay mechanics. Explain why something worked (or not). You're doing all of this so that when you apply for a position with a company that needs a reviewer, you have something to point to that will show them you are actually capable of doing it. |

I agree with gamereviewfan, try to start on YouTube. If you become popular - you might get an invitation or just use it for portfolio to increase your "value"
