Question Which Software Should I Use?!

Hey Guys,

I'm new to the forum, but not to the website. I'm wondering about software that has, for example, a multi-button interface that can be programmed to affect compositions in real-time.

To be more vague, I'm looking to write music that evolves as a player progresses through the game. I'm sure I could sequence something that crossfades, dims, and filters sound, but I want to be able to play with it in a more real-time, player-controlled environment.

For instance, a heroic theme is playing on a loop and I press a button or perform an action and the music crossfades into the end-game, one-shot composition.

I'm sure that software exists for this, I'm just wondering if there's an industry standard. If I recall, the Super Monkey Island iOS port used MusE, but they said that it was arduous and that they wouldn't go that route again. I've looked into Unity3d a little -- that seems like it might be what I'm looking for. Right now I work in Logic...

Any thoughts?

Yea, we're doing something similar for our current project in Unity.

Have you ever played Tie Fighter? That game had music that changed as you progressed in each level. Basically if the odds were against you, the music was gloomy. If the Empire was winning, it played victorious music. If a Rebel Alliance capital ship hyperspaced in, it would play a spooky rendition of the Rebel Alliance theme.

Skies of Arcadia is another game that did this, though I'll admit that it was a little annoying and not as polished as Tie Fighter. If the party did well, it had action music. If the party was almost dead, it would have the gloom music.

It would be mostly on the programming side for this. Basically you would say "change song to X" depending on the conditions of the level/hero/game.
