I'd like to start working on some simple C++ game projects (think Tetris, Breakout, Missile Command). I just want to work on my C++ skills. For getting some simple 2D graphics up on a screen and getting input, I am considering SDL, Allegro or DirectX. I've used Cocos2d with Objective-C and I'd like something similar on the C++ side. Any suggestions?

I haven't tried Allegro or SDL, but I have played around with Direct3D (the graphics part of DirectX, which encompasses both 2D and 3D graphics despite the name). I like it quite a bit, but it does have a considerable learning curve, and if do go that route I would suggest buying a decent book that walks you through the process of creating a game with it. Good luck!
