Default Game Programming Challenge 2: Scrolling Shooter

Welcome to the second Game Programming Challenge! We're all short of time at the moment, so here is a quick challenge for you to play with during the holiday period and through into January.

The Challenge
This challenge is to make a Scolling Shoot'em-Up. I quite like this chellenge because of the huge variety of possibilities. You could go with a simple space shoot'em up like Galaxian, or a car game like Spy Hunter, or any other type of game, providing it contains scrolling and shooting (or perhaps even punching & kicking). The complexity is completely up to you.

Ikaruga used the concept of bullet polarity to add a new aspect to the game

The Deadline
The deadline for this challenge is Sunday 25th January (submissions should be made on or before this date). You may find it useful to submit your game early to make sure that the judges can run it on their computers. Source code does not need to be submitted, only the executable file and any assets it needs to run.

Submitting
To submit your game you can upload it to your own web space and provide the link in this thread, or we can set up an e-mail to send it to (PM me for the e-mail address). We may also create a website the allows you to upload projects at a later date.

Additional Information
You may use any language you desire, providing the end result can be played by the judges easily. You may reuse code that you have already written in the past. Projects can be submitted by a lone programmer or by a team. Please try to keep the file size down when submitting a game. Also if you are taking part it would be good to know, so we can judge the success of the challenge. If you need any help, or advice on any aspect of your game, feel free to ask. Finally why not make a post/thread to tell us about your project?

  • Particle effects
  • Sounds (these really make shooters work)
  • Multiplayer
  • Interesting environments
  • Special weapons

Judges
Judging on this competition will begin on the Friday 30th January and Judges comment will be posted by the following weekend. The judges will be:

Scribble Wars by mordekai ( Results )
Lines & Curves by brainydexter ( Results )
(space to fire weapon once collected. W, A, S and D control the direction it fires in)

I think I will try and work on this challenge even though I did not complete Pong on time. I did finish a version shortly after on my own using C# with XNA framework 2.0. The collision detection was not perfect and there was no computer player but I was able to get things on the screen and able to move so it was a start I am disappointed that I had to go to C# in order to get it running. I wanted to work on C++ skills! Anyways I think I will give this a shot, the challenges do get me motivated and trying is never wrong.

Well you have more time for this one, the last challenge was just over 2 weeks. This challenge is over a month long. If you want to use C++ for this challenge I recommend you do it with DirectX9, then use either one of the sample programs that come with it or an online tutorial as a starting point.

Again if you have any questions, or points you're struggling on, don't hesitate to ask.

So all I need is the DirectX latest SDK and it will have sample programs with it? Graphics was definately my biggest difficulty when I was trying to work with C++ with Pong, I was using GDI and I was failing miserably.

I'd like to participate in this challenge. I'll be using c++/opengl and there's a good chance it may suck or not be finished in time. I am also not sure just yet if I'll be working on this alone or with a team (art will certainly look better if I keep to the code )

Well it didn't take me long but I was able to get graphics on the screen! Something I couldn't do for the Pong challenge with C++ lol. I have a friend I met at the American Expo creating the textures for me (ships, powerups, etc.) which will definitely help me allocate my time better. I am starting to get a better feel for game structure and design and it feels good

Good. Is this using DirectX?
